Brrr! This Halloween night will be one of SA's coldest in 30 years

It's leading up to the Hill Country's first freeze of the season, and a Wednesday-morning low of 36 in the city.

SAN ANTONIO — If you're reading this, you might be in the middle of putting finishing touches on your child's trick-or-treating costume. Here's hoping it allows for an extra layer or two.

Since 2019, Halloween lows have been inching up in San Antonio, from a frigid 34 degrees in 2019 to a brisk 53 in 2022.

This week's brief cold snap is reversing the trend for 2023, however, as we're expected to drop to 36 overnight after families have settled in back home with their candy hauls. By 10 p.m., as trick-or-treating winds down around town, we'll have already dropped well below 55 degrees, which is the seasonal average temperature for this time of year.

This means we're in for a frightful (or frightfully satisfying, depending on how much you avoided this summer's intense heat) reality: One of the coldest Halloween nights San Antonio has experienced in the last 30 years. Aside from 2019, the only other time San Antonio dipped to below 40 was in 1993, when it was a scary 27 degrees to finish October in the city.

It's all leading up to our coldest morning of the season so far on Wednesday. San Antonians will wake up to temperatures in the mid-30s while Hill Country residents will see their first freeze of the season. Kerrville and Fredericksburg are expected to see the mercury at 28 degrees at 8 a.m.

We'll get a reprieve when the calendar flips to November. Temperatures will warm back up to the mid-60s on Wednesday, and we should hit 70 degrees again by the end of the week, with morning lows of 51 and 58 on Thursday and Friday, respectively.
