SAN ANTONIO — Keep the sunscreen and water bottles handy: Dangerous heat is sticking around until at least midweek in San Antonio.
The stifling-hot weather hasn't let up after the city notched its first 100-degree day of the year Friday. Humidity has pushed heat indices, or the "feels-like" temperature, closer to 110.
The National Weather Service (NWS) now says that heat is expected to stick around for at least a couple more days, having extended the region's Excessive Heat Warning until at least 9 p.m. Wednesday. NWS officials say heat index values of up to 120 degrees are possible in some communities, and highs of 100-plus degrees are expected for every day this week.
The City of San Antonio has a comprehensive online database of dozens of places – including senior centers, community centers and pools – where residents can go to cool down. For residents looking for an open facility to cool down in during the Juneteenth holiday, these 14 locations are available.
If you're planning to be outside for a prolonged stretch during this heat wave, it's important to take precautions. Drinking plenty of water, wearing loose-fitting clothes and avoiding strenuous exercise are some of the key tips to prevent exhaustion, which you might be experiencing if you're heavily sweating, are looking pale, are experiencing dizziness or feel like fainting.
If your skin is hot with no sweat, you have a rapid pulse or you feel confusion, those are signs you may be experiencing heat stroke. Click here for other things to keep in mind when staying safe from the heat.
