SAN ANTONIO — Hurricane Milton, now a Category 3 hurricane, is approaching landfall Wednesday as Floridians are still recovering from Hurricane Helene, which tore through the state just last week. Now, victims across several states are in need of blood and platelet donations.
South Texas Blood and Tissue is working diligently with blood centers in states which have received the most damage. The organization has sent more than 100 units of Type O blood to prepare for possible shortages before Hurricane Milton makes landfall; experts say it has the possibility to become one of the worst storms Florida has faced in more than a century.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Florida blood centers lost hundreds of whole blood and platelet donations due to power outages, storm damage and disrupted work schedules despite their best efforts to keep operations running.
How can Texans help our neighbors? By donating with South Texas Blood and Tissue.
All blood types are needed, especially O-positive and O-negative, according to the organization.
“Our neighbors have been affected by Hurricane Helene and it's been very challenging for them. With another hurricane in the horizon, it is best to be as prepared as we can,” said Audra Taylor, vice president of blood operations with South Texas Blood & Tissue. “If we can all have our neighbors and friends step up, we can help recovery efforts.”
