'The last two days are crazy': New Year's Eve preparations underway in Bexar County

Authorities are encouraging people to party responsibly.

SAN ANTONIO — Thousands of people in Bexar County are preparing to ring in the New Year with fireworks and festivities.

At the Blastoff Fireworks stand in Helotes, sales are ‘skyrocketing.’

“The last two days are absolutely crazy,” said co-owner Courtney Davila. “It’s like Christmas! They are trying to do their last-minute shopping.”

Some items have already sold out. But with more than 600 fireworks to choose from, Davila says there’s something for everyone.

“We have a wide variety of fountains this season,” she said. “The Pokeball has been a fan favorite. This one we try to carry every season - which is the snow cone. There’s lots of color and vibrant showers. For the adults, the artillery balls are fun because you can make them last longer and you’ll get your big bursts.”

Blastoff Fireworks has partnered with the VFW this year, according to Davila.  If you bring a blanket to either location, you will get a free fountain firework. The blankets will be distributed to veterans in need.

At liquor stores, bottles are flying off the shelves. With New Year’s Eve landing on a Sunday, liquor stores in Texas will be closed on Sunday and Monday (for a total of 61 hours).

On Friday, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) asked people to party responsibly. A spokesperson released the following statement.

“Throughout the month of December, SAPD has posted through social media NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) marketing tools reminding citizens to plan ahead and have a sober ride when celebrating the holiday season.

SAPD encourages citizens to start the New Year making the right decision by having a sober ride planned this New Year’s Eve. SAPD’s DWI Unit will be in full force this New Year’s weekend, saving lives by stopping DWI’s.

As far as fireworks, the San Antonio Police Department wants to remind citizens that the use of fireworks is prohibited in the City of San Antonio and can result in a Class C Misdemeanor which can carry a fine of up to $2,000.

If you are injured or someone you know is injured because of fireworks, please call 911 immediately.  Citizens observing reckless use of fireworks that presents an immediate risk of bodily injury or fire hazard, may call the SAPD Non-Emergency number 210-207-7273. The San Antonio Fire Department will prioritize these calls and will respond based on risk assessment and the then current demand of calls. We encourage residents to attend one of the professional fireworks displays, occurring throughout the city. SAPD wishes everyone a safe and happy New Year!”

The City of San Antonio will be hosting a New Year's Eve celebration, complete with a fireworks show, at Civic Park. For information, click HERE.
