Inside the boots of a server at Tip Top Cafe | Bill in My Boots

Bill trained with Tommy to serve smiles and food at a San Antonio classic.

SAN ANTONIO — Known for their onion rings, chicken fried steak and mile high pie, the Tip Top Café has been serving San Antonio for 81 years.

I recently put on the apron and started taking orders as a waiter in one of this state’s oldest family-owned restaurants. The original owner, Linda DeWese said, “we’ve been setting the table for mayors and mechanics for a long time. And we’re proud to say everyone feels at home.”

And she’s right. I felt right at home as a waiter at the Tip Top, especially after learning the ropes from a few true veterans. Serving lunch and dinner just north of downtown on Fredericksburg Road, if you hit the Tip Top at the right time, you can get in on “pie happy hour.” At the end of the night, they sell slices of their fresh pies for only $2.

Watch the video below to see more from the server's point of view.
