SAPD: 13-year-old charged with several felonies after early morning shooting and chase

Neighbors say shootings have increased in the area south of Woodlawn Lake recently.

SAN ANTONIO — A neighbor who calls himself David said he was shaken awake just before 2 a.m. Friday by the sound of rapid, close gunshots.

David said "Maybe five or more shots, rapid shots, that sounded very close to our home. It sounded like a shootout."

David added over the last few weeks, there have been numerous shooting incidents in the area on West Laurel, just a few blocks south of Woodlawn Lake.

David said he wasn't surprised by the shooting but he was surprised that the teen San Antonio Police arrested is just 13 years old.

"His age is shocking and very scary, somebody that young," David said, adding "I'm glad they caught him and hopefully they'll be able to keep this stuff from happening."

David said his wife told him not to get involved in the attack, but he wanted to know what was going on outside his door.

"I actually rolled out of bed and hit the floor and then went to try and see.  My wife tells me don't look, but if I see something I might be able to report it," David said.

With a family to protect, David said "It's pretty scary because you worry abut the bullets and you don't know who is shooting in which direction."

Pam is a few doors down.  She said she heard the commotion overnight and she is concerned that the shooting is part of a dangerous trend she has noticed over time.

When she was taking care of chores recently, Pam said she had a close call when shots rang out just a few feet away.

"And then boom, boom, boom, I got so scared!" Pam said.

A man driving by in a truck stopped to talk about the recent uptick in shootings.  He produced a plastic grocery bag with 18 shell casings that he said he picked up out of the street recently.

"That was all in one night," the man said as he pointed out casings from 40, 45 and 9mm guns.

He also pointed to a vehicle parked in the street nearby that is marked by a single bullet hole in the middle of the front grill.

The man said "That was like a week ago."  He said the shots were fired at night, but he went out the next morning and found the shell casings glistening in the sun on opposite corners.

With regard to the most recent attack, police say the teen they arrested is now facing charges of deadly conduct - firearm, evading arrest with a vehicle, evading arrest on foot, unlawful carry-firearm and unauthorized use of motor vehicle.

They said he also had a pending arrest warrant on a previous charge of unauthorized use of motor vehicle.

In the Friday attack, police said both the home and the vehicle of a 56-year-old man were found with bullet holes.  Police said the man was inside the home when the shooting occurred, but nobody was injured.

Police said officers located the suspect vehicle driving nearby and confirmed the vehicle was an active stolen vehicle.

They say the suspect began to evade officers when they attempted a traffic stop but after a short, authorized pursuit, the teen got out of the vehicle and threw a handgun away and tried to run away.

He was captured without incident a short distance away and is awaiting an appearance before a juvenile judge.
