Alleged porch pirates caught on video following UPS truck

"It looked like they were following some trucks around, trying to get some packages," one victim said.

SAN ANTONIO — Porch pirates are ready to pounce on your holiday packages.  A local woman was recently victimized, and caught the theft on camera.

"The guy walking up to the street, and then running away, and then trying to get into his car and like peel out, so the whole thing was kind of hilarious," said Amy Heller.

Heller says her neighborhood in the Lorence Creek subdivision is normally quiet, and doesn't have much porch pirate activity. Heller says that's why she was surprised to capture thieves stealing packages off her porch.

"It's a disappointment, it's a shame," she said.

Heller says she posted the video on the Nextdoor App to alert neighbors.

San Antonio police said if you are the victim of porch pirates you should report it, because it could help investigators find a pattern. Heller said she didn't report it because she didn't want to tie up police resources.

"Lessons, just lessons learned," said Heller.

We've seen these crimes happen since the holiday season began, and police recommend arranging larger more expensive items to be shipped to the electronic code activated Amazon lockers, or to their local post office to prevent theft.

As for Heller's lesson learned, she says she's now considering not having things delivered to her house.

"We're actually looking into some of those offsite storage and pickup options, that some of the delivery services have," she said.
