'I heard his last words' | Family of 16-year-old allegedly shot by younger teen shares the pain they're going through

"I was holding him, I heard his last words. All I kept telling him was, 'Don't leave me,'" the victim's father said.

SAN ANTONIO — A deadly shooting broke out between two teenage boys at a west-side apartment complex Wednesday night, authorities say.

San Antonio Police were called to the 1500 block of San Carlos Street around 10:40 p.m.

Police say an ongoing feud between two teens boiled over after the suspect started taunting the 16-year-old victim about his mother, who recently died. A fight broke out, and at some point the 14-year-old suspect pulled out a gun and shot the victim multiple times.

The older teen was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries. The medical examiner has identified him as Joel Castillo.

Police say the suspect's mother gave investigators the name and a description of her son following the incident. According to SAPD, the suspect is a male who initially fled the location but was taken into custody shortly after.

“No families out here deserve this, father or mother to have to see their kid leave this earth, leave this world," said Ralph Castillo Sr., Joel Castillo's father.

Castillo says he tried to protect his son before the teen shot him.

"He has a gun, he tells me to get back," Castillo said.

Police say before the teen was shot, the suspect was taunting him over the death of his mother, Sandra, who died in a car accident in February. Joel was taken to the hospital where he died.

"I feel like I ain't got no heart.  I feel like I ain't got nothing left inside," said Ralph Castillo Jr., Joel's brother.

Ralph must now cope with the loss of his sibling.

"I really wanted my baby brother to be with me for the rest of the years we had to grow together," said Castillo Jr.

Ralph now takes some comfort that his mother and brother are at rest watching over his family, but it doesn't take away the pain they feel today.

"All the families out there that lost their children, hey, I feel y'all's pain," the father said. "I never thought I would lose mine."
