Family of woman shot and killed at east-side apartment complex speaks out

34-year-old Roger Jordan Conaway told deputies he shot Tonya Davis in self-defense.

SAN ANTONIO — Family members have identified the woman shot and killed at an east-side apartment complex Tuesday as Tonya Davis.

Tonya's adoptive mother Marjorie Davis said she was the light in everyone's lives.

"Even though he killed her…he could not dim her light," Marjorie said.

Bexar County sheriff's deputies responded to an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Woodlake Parkway early Tuesday morning for reports of a shooting. Officials say the man accused of shooting the woman at Woodlake Villas walked into a store near the apartment, placed a gun on the counter and then called police.

BCSO said the suspect, 34-year-old Roger Jordan Conaway told authorities he shot his 32-year-old common law wife Tonya Davis in self-defense.

A worker who was inside the the gas station at the time told KENS 5 she was scared when he came in.

"My coworkers told me to just not look at him," she said. "He kept going in and out of the store calling someone."

BCSO deputies went to the apartment and found Tonya face-down, with several gunshot wounds to her back. A two-year-old baby was also found inside the apartment, BCSO said. The baby was not harmed.

Tonya was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where she died from her injuries.

Officials said Conaway was arrested at the nearby gas station and faces a first degree felony murder charge. The baby has been placed with family members at this time.

Right now the baby is staying with Marjorie. She said Tonya left behind two more children that are older.

“Why did you have to destroy such a beautiful soul…you lived there with her…you know how close she was with her kids," Marjorie said.

Marjorie said she will never understand why Conaway allegedly shot and killed her daughter.

"No matter what you do…you didn’t dim her light.”
