SAN ANTONIO — Nearly six weeks after a 22-year-old Converse woman was killed while outside the family home, authorities say the investigation into the attack remains ongoing—and wide-ranging.
In a Tuesday update from the Converse Police Department (CPD), authorities said the Texas Rangers, FBI and Secret Service are involved in the investigation into Khadija Derry's murder. Her family believes she was targeted when she was shot nearly 20 times while sitting in her car on Dec. 6.
Derry was remembered in a memorial service on Jan. 7, but answers about what happened remain elusive. No suspects have been identified or arrested, but CPD says the investigation "has led to a vast amount of information and potential leads, all of which will and have been investigated to determine the validity and relevance to the investigation."
Officials are also hopeful there will be a break in the case before long.
"The Converse Police department has made significant progress in the investigation, and we are hopeful that soon forensic evidence crucial to the investigation will expedite a favorable conclusion," the CPD release says, adding that sharing details of the investigation publicly could hurt their search for the killers.
Derry's uncle, Kevin Shandy, previously told KENS 5 that when he heard about the shooting and rushed to the scene, he found his niece being treated by first responders.
She would be pronounced dead within the next hour.
According to the arrest affidavit for a Converse man who could possibly be connected to Derry's murder, the victim's younger sister told detectives a girl had threatened the sister on the day Derry was killed.
“We’re full of questions of right now," Shandy said. "That’s why we want to make sure we get this out there."
Derry's mother announced they plan to start a foundation in her honor to help local athletes. She added they are also working with one of her former coaches to start a scholarship in her honor.
Meanwhile, CPD says it will release more information when authorities deem it "reasonable and responsible to do so."
"This investigation is complex, the investigation is ongoing, we will continue to investigate and will not stop," the department said. "The Converse Police Department wants nothing other than to arrest those responsible and to bring what little closure we can to the family."
