Hearing set for San Antonio babysitter connected to deadly dog attack of 1-year-old baby

The hearing will likely discuss the process to gain legal control of the three dogs involved in the attack and rule on their fate.

SAN ANTONIO — A hearing for a woman San Antonio authorities are holding accountable for the deadly dog attack of a child earlier this month is set for Thursday afternoon.

According to arrest records, on October 7 Erika Castro left her 1- year-old son Jiryiah Johnson with babysitter Heather Rodriguez, who then left him and her daughter alone at home with her dogs.

Rodriguez's teenage daughter told deputies Scoobey, a male dog, mauled the baby and bit her repeatedly as she fought for their lives. Jiryiah died that night from his injuries.

On top of the initial charges for injury to a child and reckless bodily injury, Rodriguez's added charges are related to her daughter’s injuries and for abandoning and endangering a child - leaving the baby in the care of a minor.

Thursday’s hearing is expected to start in the Justice of the Peace precinct four courtroom at 2 p.m. The hearing will likely discuss the process to gain legal control of the three dogs involved in the attack and rule on their fate.

Rodriguez’s bonds on the upgraded charges are $150,000 bringing her total bail to a quarter of a million dollars.
