'I am a bit scared' I San Antonio residents fearful after fatal stabbing along Leon Creek trail, suspect on the loose

The 59-year-old victim was stabbed several times and died enroute to the hospital Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

SAN ANTONIO — Walkers, runners and bikers are keeping extra vigilant after a man was stabbed to death along the Leon Creek Greenway Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, police are still searching for the suspect.

“I come here around three times every week, even in the evenings and I’ve never been afraid of anything," said Stephen Nganga.

Police responded to the VIA Transit Center Trailhead just after 4 p.m. and found a 59-year-old man on the ground in the middle of a paved path with multiple stab wounds.

The victim died on the way to the hospital, according to authorities.

Witnesses told police the suspect ran away, heading north on the trail system. Both the suspect and victim are believed to be homeless.

Nganga learned what happened Thursday morning when he came across yellow caution tape, parks department workers and an individual cleaning the trail.

“Now I am a bit scared to come at some hours," Nganga said.

Lejan De La Garza often walks portions of the more than 20-mile Leon Creek Greenway alongside his dog Winnie. Like Nganga, he saw the yellow tape and cleanup efforts of the paved path.

“It is kind of make me a little bit nervous," Delagarza said. “I try to do maybe like a 6 p.m. walk but I want to get her acclimated.”

De La Garza supports the idea of increasing the presence of Parks Police and trail stewards to canvass the trails. However for now, he's confident in his own ways to protect himself and his dog. Among the safety practices includes having one ear bud left out when listening to music and looking around

"She’s a lot more alert. I keep a flashlight with me just to kind of make sure nobody’s sneaking up on me or anything like that," De La Garza said.
