Two more students in Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD come forward reporting an assault at the hands of a substitute teacher

This comes nearly a week after a substitute teacher was arrested in the same district, accused of hurting two students during a fight.

SAN ANTONIO — Schertz Police are investigating claims a substitute teacher assaulted two more students in Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD (SCUC ISD).

This report comes nearly a week after a substitute teacher was arrested by Cibolo Police. 42-year-old Yorllin Hernandez is accused of injuring two students at Barbara Jordan Intermediate School.

Schertz Police notified the public about these new allegations Thursday, which are separate from the incidents being investigated by Cibolo Police. As of Thursday evening, it is unknown if the two investigations involve the same substitute teacher.

The evening of September 27, Barbara Jordan Intermediate School parents opened an e-mail with disturbing news alerting them of a substitute teacher arrested and charged with two counts of injury to a child. The school is comprised of 5th and 6th grade students.

"Instantly I went into a panic," one parent told KENS 5 in an anonymous phone interview.

Yorllin Hernandez, a substitute teacher employed by third party staffing company ESS, was handcuffed on campus. He's accused of hurting two of his students during a fight. School administrators were told about the allegations at the start of dismissal Friday.

"I just found that a little concerning because it did take so long for the school district to reach out to us," the parent told us. "That's why I contacted KENS 5."

This parent said her main concern was getting a picture of the teacher.

"I needed to see the person's face so I could go to my child and say, 'Hey look, do you recognize this person? Have you ever been around this person? Did this person ever hurt you?' I just wanted to double check with my child just to make sure he wasn't a victim either."

She was relieved to learn her son did not recognize the suspect.

"We do need to talk to our children. I have that open communication with them to make sure they are safe," the parent added. "If they do have any incidents, little or large, that they have that comfort in coming to me as their parent, letting me know, and I'll do everything I can to advocate for them."

Cibolo Police, whose School Resource Officer made the arrest, couldn't share specifics about the fight or what led up to it. They did say both students were not seriously hurt, and commended them for coming forward.

"We're very proud that students feel that they can go up to our officers and report something that can just be very uncomfortable for them and that they trust our officers enough to speak out when something does happen to them," said Erik Mireles, Public Information Officer of the Cibolo Police Department. "It's not good keeping things like this quiet."

District officials reassured families that Hernandez will never return to SCUCISD. He was transported and booked into the Guadalupe County Adult Detention Center without further incident, and released on bond Saturday.

Police Chief Jim Lowery said "We will be working with the school district, family of the victims and law enforcement partners of Bexar County to ensure we act with due diligence to complete a timely and comprehensive investigation. Presently, there are no safety issues to any student as these allegations are investigated."

Schertz Police initiated an offense report for Injury to a Child, a 3rd degree felony, but as of Thursday evening they have not made any arrests.

If anyone has any further information that can help in either investigation, you are urged to contact the Cibolo Police Department at 210-659-1999 or the Schertz Police Department at 210-619-1200.

A spokeswoman for Schertz Police told KENS 5 an update in their investigation should be released by Friday.
