How did Caleb Harris die? Autopsy report reveals few clues

The Nueces County Medical Examiner lists the manner in which Harris died as “undetermined,” saying there does not appear to be any evidence of a traumatic injury.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The death of college student Caleb Harris remains a mystery despite Tuesday’s release of his autopsy results.

The Nueces County Medical Examiner lists the manner in which Harris died as “undetermined” but has said there does not appear to be any evidence of a homicide or traumatic injury.

"After a complete autopsy examination, including toxicologic analysis and microscopic examination. . . . it is our opinion that the cause of death of Caleb Wilson Harris, a 21-year-old male, cannot be determined with certainty," states the autopsy report, which was acquired by 3NEWS on Tuesday.

The report states that the condition of the remains, which the report states were "near complete," could be obscuring "subtle injuries and/or additional significant natural disease," and that the "exact details leading up to the terminal event and death are currently unclear."

It also states that if further relevant information comes available in the future, that the office's findings can change.

Harris went missing March 4 and was last seen at his off-campus apartment on Ennis Joslin Road. Despite an exhaustive search for Harris in the days following his disappearance, his body was not found until June 24.

A city worker found a portion of Harris’ remains at a city wastewater lift station not far from where Harris was last seen. 3NEWS exclusively reported that lift station was locked prior to the discovery of those remains. Police also told 3NEWS they had checked that lift station multiple times in the initial search for Harris.

The Missing Persons Unit at the University of North Texas Health Science Center tested those remains, and both police and Harris’ family said on July 17 the remains were those of Caleb.

What happens next in the Caleb Harris case?

Corpus Christi Police told 3NEWS that the investigation into Harris’ disappearance and death was still ongoing and that the department was awaiting the autopsy results.

Given Tuesday’s announcement that there does not appear to be any evidence of homicide, CCPD must determine whether to keep the investigation open or close it.

"We haven't been able to find any evidence that clearly suggests that he was met with foul play, that there was a homicide involved,” CCPD Assistant Chief Todd Green told 3NEWS on July 18. "The investigation's not over, but at this point we don't have any clear evidence of exactly how he ended up in that lift station.”

The Harris family has told 3NEWS they do not believe their son’s death was an accident.

Did Caleb Harris have any alcohol or drugs in his system?

The report states that toxicology reports were negative, indicating he did not have drugs or alcohol in his system when he died.
