Community helps cake shop damaged in fatal crash

SAPD reports a 61-year-old driver somehow lost control of his SUV and crashed into Letty's Cakes and More.

SAN ANTONIO — A driver was killed after he crashed into a San Antonio cake shop, according to police.

SAPD reports a 61-year-old driver somehow lost control of his SUV and crashed into Letty's Cakes and More off Fredericksburg Road near Fulton Avenue. The driver was taken to the hospital where he died.

Several hours after the crash, the owners and crews spent much of the day surveying the damage and making repairs.

Owner Maria Santillan said she was in disbelief when she showed up to her shop Tuesday morning. She said she just took over the business three months ago.

"I felt bad," she said. “So bad. Because, this is only material. But, for it being a human life, it is another thing. The good thing is nobody was working here at the time. It was closed. It was in the middle of the night."

On Tuesday, she was closed as crews took over to make repairs. Customers did show up to make donations, or bought the cakes she needed to get rid of.

"I am still going to be working," she said. "I have to, because I have three employees that depend on me."

She is hoping insurance will cover most of the damage.

"We need all the support," the owner said. "We have birthday cakes, wedding cakes, any kind of cakes, we are here."

The Bexar County Medical Examiner has not released the name of the man killed. Police at the scene said the driver may have been speeding when he lost control.
