Corpus Christi mayor proclaims Sept. 17 as 'Johnny Canales Day'

The late Tejano legend was recognized for his contributions to Tejano music and culture and his commitment to our community.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Tuesday, Mayor Paulette Guajardo proclaimed Sept. 17 as "Johnny Canales Day," recognizing the late Tejano legend for his impact on our local community and far beyond.

Canales got his start on "The Domingo Peña Show" here on KIII. He then launched his own show in 1983, "The Johnny Canales Show," making the world dance right up until his death this past June.

His wife and co-host Nora Canales as well as his daughters accepted the proclamation.

"In everybody's hearts, we will carry him and honor him like today, and be proud of everything that he did," Nora told those in attendance at the council meeting.

Tejano stars and fans alike grieved his passing, sharing stories of how he touched their lives one show at a time.
