Landlord's boyfriend charged with murder after shooting death of tenant, police say

Police say detectives were able to gather enough evidence to charge the shooter, who was claiming self-defense, with murder three weeks after the shooting.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was charged with murder three weeks after a dispute between a landlord and tenant led to a deadly shooting, police said.

Back on December 14, police responded to the 1000 block of West Huisache Avenue for reports of a shooting in progress.

Police say it started as a dispute between a tenant of the rental property and the landlord's boyfriend. According to officials, the victim, David Beck, 41, had appealed an eviction notice given by the landlord and won his appeal. That morning, Beck was attempting to serve the landlord with the appeal when the argument began.

Police said the landlord's boyfriend, identified as Shawn Pivonka, made an aggressive move toward Beck, and Beck pulled out a gun in a "defensive manner." That's when police said Pivonka pulled out his gun in an "offensive manner." Beck was shot and later died on the way to the hospital.

On December 20, SAPD says detectives had enough evidence to get a murder warrant issued for Pivonka. They also looked at multiple videos of the incident from both cell phones and surveillance footage.

Pivonka is facing murder charges for this incident.
