'Can finally breathe' | Popular Pleasanton eatery opens up several months after fire

On Tuesday, the owners of Cafe Chris had a soft opening of their new location seven months after the devastating fire.

PLEASANTON, Texas — A beloved eatery in Pleasanton is back in business several months after it caught fire. Cafe Chris shuttered in March after it went up flames, crews told the owners it was electrical.

At the time, the owners Mary Rodriguez and granddaughter Erica Lopez, were trying to figure out what to do next. Seven months later, the duo opened a new location.

"We had jump through hoops to get this building," Rodriguez said.

"Getting here is like we can finally breathe, because it is finally here," Lopez said

On Tuesday, the eatery had a soft opening.

"I put it out there because everyone has been excited about coming in," Lopez said. "I understand we are excited too. I feel like these people might get antsy or angry if the wait gets long."

Their loyal customers did turn out as most of the day it was packed. They said they missed plates like the fan-favorite chicken fried steak.

The popular spot's new building is located at 1627 Second Street in Pleasanton.

"I am thinking they can feel the love coming from us," Rodriguez said.

Next week, the eatery will celebrate 32 years of being in business. Lopez said the new space allows them to expand in to other areas like perhaps a bar in the future.
