Meet the family that's been serving hungry State Fair visitors for seven decades

The family is celebrating 75 years of participating in the State Fair of Texas. There's nothing that will slow its generational success down.

SAN ANTONIO — The State Fair of Texas is all about family fun, and the Nevins family has been taking it to another level for 75 years.

Josey Nevins Mayes is the fourth-generation owner of Nevins Concessions. She started cleaning tables and counters around 5 years old.

“You have to love what you do out here. It’s in our blood," she said. “We’re hands-on, we’re very hands-on. Of course, there’s long and hard days. But how could you not smile at the end of the day being out at the State Fair of Texas?"

The Nevinses, who live in Dallas, know tradition helps keep family-run businesses at the State Fair together. But hard work is another key ingredient to their success.

"To know that something has served my family and we have served it for 75 years, and it has fed our family for 75 years, that could make me cry right now," Mayes said. "I think there's something really special about that."

Their offerings range from the sumptuous to the sweet, and include smash burgers, hot wings, nutty bar confections and more.

Running the business beside her mother is her favorite part, having joined her as a business partner in 2022. As their family’s empire continues to grow, so will the smiles of visitors who leave Nevins Concessions with their hands full and stomachs growling.

“For a little girl to grow up and see her mom be such a baller business woman, but still be so feminine and positive and a light, there’s something really special about that."

The State Fair of Texas runs through Oct. 20 in Dallas.
