Woman believed to be homeless dies from possible heat stroke during hottest stretch of year, SAPD says

Police said a 46-year-old woman was found unresponsive on the sidewalk.

SAN ANTONIO — A woman believed to be homeless was found dead from possible heat stroke on Thursday afternoon, according to San Antonio police.

Authorities said the woman appeared to be homeless.

Officers received a call on the 100 block of East Fredericksburg Road, near a gas station just north of downtown, around 3 p.m.  Police said a 46-year-old woman was found unresponsive on the sidewalk.

Paramedics were called to the scene and performed lifesaving measures, but were unsuccessful and declared the woman dead.

Authorities said there were no obvious signs of foul play and believe the woman died from natural causes resulting from a heat-related illness. It reached 106 degrees in San Antonio on Thursday, the National Weather Service said, breaking a 76-year-old record as the hottest stretch of 2024 continues.

The death comes days after nonprofits announced they were working to help the homeless community as scorching temperatures continued to pummel San Antonio.

As of Friday, authorities say the cause of death is still unknown and the Bexar County Medical Examiner will be conducting a death investigation.
