SAN ANTONIO — If you ever thought that former San Antonio Spurs guard Johnny Moore's basketball card would be incredibly valuable, raise your hand.
No? Well, it is.
In 1986, Fleer released basketball cards featuring some of the greatest NBA players to grace the court. It included Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, Larry Bird, and other great basketball players.
However, Moore never won an NBA title, is not in the Basketball Hall of Fame, has never been named an NBA All-Star, and averaged less than 10 points per game, yet his card is coveted.
So why is Moore's card so valuable in the Fleer 1986 set?
Rarity!
The set only contained 67 copies of Gem Mint PSA-graded 10 Moore cards, but his card outsells all others in the set, including some of the greatest to play the NBA.
And a recent Moore card went up for auction on eBay and sold for $16,900.
Yes, you read that right!
So watch for this specific card, or check your shoe boxes and dresser drawers. You might be sitting on a payday and not even know it.
The Spurs retired Moore's jersey in 1988. He played for San Antonio from 1980-87 and 1989-90. He has career averages of 9.4 points, 7.4 assists, and 3.0 rebounds. He contracted a rare and mysterious disease called “Desert Fever” in 1986, which paused his playing career.
He remained close to the Spurs after his career was over. He would be an assistant coach for the then-Austin Toros in the 2010–11 season of the then-named NBA D-League.
