SAN ANTONIO — Anthony Carter spent just a little time in San Antonio in 2003, playing just five games before the Spurs waived him due to injury.
But there is a chance that the Carter name will once again adorn a Silver & Black jersey if San Antonio uses one of its first-round picks on Anthony's son: Providence's Devin Carter.
Some mock drafts have Carter going to the Spurs at No. 8. If that happens, the former Spurs guard will cheer on his son from the sidelines.
"With my dad, I got a glimpse of it," Carter said about seeing his father in the league during the NBA Draft media session. "He's kind of letting me go through it [NBA Draft] and experience it myself."
Anthony went undrafted in 2008 but ultimately had a long NBA tenure, playing from 1999-2012.
He also played for the Heat, Knicks, Nuggets, Raptors and Timberwolves, translating into a wealth of league knowledge for Devin to tap into.
"I'll ask him questions basketball-related, but for the most part we just talk about life," he said.
Seeing his father in the league motivated Devin to make it his goal to follow in his father's footsteps.
"He never forced basketball on me," Carter said. "He always said he will always be there for me, regardless of what sport I play. He was going to help me reach my dreams."
"Just that it is basketball, and he played it, it's definitely a special moment for him and me as well."
Following Anthony's NBA playing days, he returned to the Spurs organization.
From 2013-15, he was an assistant coach for the then-Austin Toros, helping shape potential San Antonio players. He now serves as an assistant coach with Memphis.
Devin says his father never stopped being his son's trainer, saying he's filled that role his entire life. He also treasures memories of his father being hard on him as a kid.
However, he doesn't recall Anthony's San Antonio days.
"I went to games, but it was towards the end of his career," he said. "So I really didn't get to see him in his Miami days or his San Antonio days."
The Spurs did work with Carter ahead of the NBA Draft.
According to a report via The Athletic, he was impressive at his pre-draft workout in San Antonio.
"It’s no surprise that Carter impressed in a private workout for the Spurs this past week, according to league sources," reported The Athletic.
Scouting reports note his defensive skills, with comparisons to ex-Spur (and now NBA champion) Derrick White.
Should the Spurs select him, it would come full circle for the Carter family in San Antonio. They would become a rare father-son duo to both suit up for the Spurs.
