SAN ANTONIO — According to a report from NBA TV's Chris Haynes, free agent guard Chris Paul is set to sign with the San Antonio Spurs.
Paul fills the Spurs' need for a veteran point guard to pair with Victor Wembanyama and mentor the young guards on the roster, including rookie Stephon Castle. He is a multi-time All-Star and a floor general and would be able to impart his NBA knowledge to the young Spurs team.
The 18-year NBA veteran averaged 9.2 points per game (the lowest of his career), 3.9 rebounds, and 6.8 assists (the second lowest) last season for Golden State and shot 37% from the three-point line.
Following the end of the Warriors' season, Paul made it clear retirement was not on the horizon.
“I’ll talk to my wife and my kids, my family, my support system, see what it looks like. But this isn’t (the end of my career). I know it for sure,” Paul said via The Athletic.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the deal is a 1-year contract at $11 million-plus.
The move also might close the door on any Trae Young-Spurs deal.
