SAN ANTONIO — Could the bright lights of Los Angeles lure San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama if the Lakers were to try to acquire him in the future?
On his show, "The Big Shot Bob Podcast," former Spur Robert Horry and his co-host Brandon Harper discussed how top-tier NBA players are always connected to the Lakers at some point in their careers.
When the topic of Wembanyama came up, they pointed to examples such as Luke Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo, who were tied to the Lakers and believes this could also happen to Wemby.
Horry's co-host predicted that he could foresee the same thing happening to Wemby at some point with the Spurs, especially if San Antonio is struggling.

"[Y]ou always hear anybody that the next star regardless of who they are is always going to be connected to the Lakers. Like you said we talked about it with Giannis a few years ago. Now it’s Luka’s turn. At some point of time down the line, hell, it’s going to be Wemby," Harper said to Horry. "Give it two, three seasons especially if the Spurs aren’t doing anything or Wemby may not be ‘happy’, you going to see his name connected to the Lakers. All in on Wemby."
This scenario is premature, with the Spurs in the middle of their rebuild and Wemby coming into his own.
Remember that the Spurs are well-positioned to make significant roster moves with abundant first and second-round draft picks, tradeable players, and financial cap flexibility. That could make San Antonio a formidable team soon.
The Spurs brought in veteran help for this upcoming season (Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes) and drafted guard Stephon Castle. Wemby is also coming into year two stronger physically and will be more of a focus as the franchise builds around him.
Yes, the Lakers have added talented big men such as Shaquille O'Neal from Orlando, Anthony Davis from New Orleans, Pau Gasol from Memphis, and Kareen Abdul Jabbar from Milwaukee.
But Wemby has expressed how much he wants to be a Spur and was in tears when San Antonio selected him No. 1 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft.
He also understands the Spurs are in a rebuilding process and is patient,
“Sometimes it takes many years for teams to get back on the competitive level,” Wembanyama said last season. "I don’t have any doubt."
