SAN ANTONIO — If veteran point guard Chris Paul decided to test the free agency waters, the San Antonio Spurs could be his next landing spot.
According to NBA writer Marc Stein, if Paul does not stay with the Warriors, the Spurs and Lakers are potential suitors.
“The Spurs and the Lakers keep coming up as potential suitors for the Warriors' Chris Paul if Paul becomes a free agent this offseason. Paul's longstanding friendship with LeBron James and his well-known desire to stay as close to his L.A.-based family as possible certainly add credence to the notion of the Lakers' signing him," reports Stein.
If true, and Paul does call San Antonio home next season, he could fill the Spurs' need for a veteran point guard to pair with Victor Wembanyama. He is an All-Star and a floor general and would be able to impart his NBA knowledge to the young Spurs team.
However, he is past his prime (38) and may want to join a team in the title hunt, considering his time in the league is running out. He has yet to help push a team to the NBA crown in his career, but the Spurs are seasons away from contending for the title.
In addition, oddsmakers BetOnline projects the Spurs as the No.1 team to land him next season.
BetOnline has the Spurs with the best odds of landing Paul next season at +200, followed by the Suns (+500), Clippers (+500), and Lakers (+1000).
The 18-year NBA veteran averaged 9.2 points per game (the lowest of his career), 3.9 rebounds, and 6.8 assists (the second lowest) last season for Golden State and shot 37% from the three-point line.
Something will have to give as his $30 million salary for the 2024-25 season becomes fully guaranteed on June 28.
