Q&A: Spurs' Wesley taking advantage of opportunity with the Austin Spurs

The Spurs guard is embracing the opportunity to play with the Austin Spurs.

SAN ANTONIO — Guard Blake Wesley has seen limited action with the San Antonio Spurs team this season.

He's logged four games since the start of the 2023-24 season and is averaging 5.3 minutes.

But he is not just sitting on the San Antonio bench.

Wesley has been making the trip to Cedar Park, Texas to suit up for the Austin Spurs and making the most of the minutes on the court.

In two games with Austin, he is recording 16.0 points per game 46% field goal shooting, 5.0 assists, and 4.5 rebounds in 29.4 minutes per game.

That time on the floor is allowing him to stay ready at a moment's notice and hone his skills should San Antonio call his number.

I had a chance to catch up with the Spurs sophomore guard to discuss his time in the G League, why fans should catch an Austin Spurs game, and more.

Jeff: How's your time out in Austin?

Blake: It's good. Good first game with them. It's a new team, a new coaching staff. It was great with them. So, I'm just excited.

Jeff: What are your thoughts about the new Austin season? There are a lot of fresh faces on that team, some returning, like Kaleb Johnson. You also have Dominick Barlow out there. How's the makeup of the team?

Blake: It's different, for sure. My first game going into it, I was like, "Okay, this is going to work out. We're going to get the team together."

I knew a couple of guys already down there, but just seeing the new guys was different for me. But I'm just going to learn their role and learn how to play with those guys.

Jeff: What is your biggest takeaway from playing in Austin?

Blake: My biggest takeaway is just playing hard and doing what they want me to do. Decision-making, getting guys open, being a great teammate, being a great point guard, being coachable. So that's what I want to do.

Jeff: Austin will be playing once again in Laredo and for the first time in Corpus Christi this year. What does that mean for the franchise?

Blake: It's a process. Going down there playing is going to get more fans for us.

Jeff: What do you think about Dominick Barlow? He's lighting it up for the Austin Spurs!

Blake: 35 points a game! I mean, you can't get much better than that.

Jeff: What are you seeing from him in Austin? How does suiting up in Austin help him out?

Blake: Yeah, getting the minutes. The more reps you get, the more you get better, the more comfortable, and the more confident you get, so you can have 35 points back to back. So he's just getting better from here. Like I said, it's a process. He's going to be great.

Jeff: Was there anything you wanted to focus on when you were in Austin?

Blake: Just being myself. Doing what they want me to do. Be a great teammate, be coachable, go down there and make decisions, and just get the win.

Jeff: Why should fans make the trip out to Cedar Park to catch the Austin Spurs in action?

Blake: (Smiles) It's fun out there. We got the Spurs and you got Austin Spurs. I mean, it's not that far of a trip to come down and watch the Austin Spurs too. There's a lot of people there!
