SAN ANTONIO — To help students in the San Antonio area return to school, Spurs' Keldon Johnson will be doing his part at the third-annual "Back 2 School Backpack Drive."
Johnson, his brother Kaleb and San Antonio boxer David Cardenas will show their support at the event on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 1 p.m. at Countdown City Cuts at 6730 S. Flores St., 78221.
The event will provide free backpacks and school supplies for local students. Students can also get free haircuts from 2 to 4 p.m. Backpacks and school supplies will be given out while supplies last.
The event organizer, San Antonio-based Jiggity Jay Entertainment, aims to make a positive impact in San Antonio and feels this event will help the city improve.
"The whole purpose of my doing the back-to-school drive and community events was to help motivate and positively impact the community I live in," said founder and entrepreneur Jiggity Jay. "This is my third year doing it at Countdown City Cuts, and every year, it's been bigger. I just use my connections with the special guests to get them to come out and support me."
Johnson has been busy giving back to the San Antonio community during the offseason.
He recently hosted a kid's basketball camp in San Antonio and Laredo, TX, and has done so much for the city since joining the team.
"For me, giving back to the city of San Antonio is mandatory," Johnson said. "Since I was a rookie, San Antonio has always brought me in and welcomed me with open arms with the fans and the San Antonio Spurs fan base."
Outside of basketball camps, he supports local companies and is there during the holidays.
He has partnered with Beldon Roofing Company, which brings essential community events to San Antonio, such as this past Thanksgiving's Turkey Drive, where 300 turkeys were given to local families, and the Christmas Toy Drive, "Cheerful Slam Jam," where free toys were given to 400 kids on San Antonio's Eastside.
