Wembanyama's dunk against Boston on the verge of making a different kind of history

Wemby's dunk against the Celtics is nearing an NBA social media record.

SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama continues to make NBA history, but this time it's on the league's social media.

The San Antonio Spurs rookie center's amazing dunk versus the Boston Celtics on Dec. 31 has generated 88.8 million views on the NBA’s Instagram in just four days. According to the league, it's on the verge of taking the No. 1 spot as the account’s most-viewed video of all time.

In case you missed it, Wemby was on a fast break with just one person in his orbit – ex-Spurs guard Derrick White – en route to the rim. The rookie then leaps from near the free-throw line for one incredible dunk that got the fans at Frost Bank Center leaping off their seats.

It doesn't hurt that the NBA has pinned the video on its Instagram page, making it easier to rack up the views.

Following the game, White responded to Wemby's dunk stating he knew to just get out of the way.

“I’m not an idiot,” White said postgame. “I was hoping he’d take another dribble, and I could try to do that. But he just picked it up and I never saw it again. So, I was just trying to get out the way.”

The rookie phenom is taking the league by storm. He currently is eighth among frontcourt players in the first returns for fan voting for the 2024 NBA All-Star.
