SAN ANTONIO — Las Vegas oddsmakers are busy with 2023-24 NBA prop futures, and with the season winding down, San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama is closing the gap to win the 2023-24 NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
According to Vegas oddsmakers at FanDuel, the Spurs' rookie big man's odds of winning the award are currently at +900. That is a dramatic uptick from the +2000 odds given at Draft Kings.
Wemby's +900 odds are good for second behind Rudy Gobert at -750, which was recently set at -800 via Draft Kings.
It is also interesting to note that the Spurs' rookie has leaped over Cavs' Jarrett Allen in the chase for the DPOY, who is at +2100 to win the award. Compare that to the +1300 odds he received from Draft Kings earlier this month.
Wemby is undoubtedly a viable candidate for the award.
He currently owns a Defensive Rating of 107.4, 10.2 rebounds per game, 1.3 steals per game, 3.4 blocks per game (league leader), and 3.0 deflections (sixth best in the NBA).
During February, Wembanyama reached 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 150 blocks to become the third-fastest player in NBA history to record those numbers. He also became the first player in league history to have 150-plus assists, 150-plus blocks, and 75-plus three-pointers in the same season.
It would be a tremendous accomplishment for Wemby should he win it. Considering the competition for the award, it will be a challenge for him to win it, but it should not be a surprise if he does walk away with the hardware.
